Trusts

Although many people may associate Trusts with aristocratic families, Trusts in their various guises are a very effective tool that can be used by many individuals and families in order to protect assets, save tax and accurately reflect different interests in property and assets.

A Trust is a legal entity set up by a Settlor. The settlor can hold title to property for the benefit of one or more other persons (Beneficiaries). Trusts are often used for tax planning purposes, for example a discretionary trust can enable a beneficiary to have the use of assets or to receive their income without those assets being treated as part of their estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.

One way to reduce your Inheritance Tax fees are to give away assets during your lifetime. This could be as an outright lifetime gift, but there are certain occasions where this is not appropriate. Another option is to create a Trust, so you can give assets away but retain flexibility over who will benefit from the assets and when.
